Spectactular infrastructural work and really nice to see both kings doing the opening together. Apparently, that picture of queen Juliana and king Baudouin was a present from Philippe to Willem-Alexander, very nice touch.

King responds to violence in Amsterdam: 'Don't look away from anti-Semitic behavior'

Update: 1 hour ago

Willem-Alexander spoke with President Yitzhak Herzog of Israel about the events of Thursday evening and night in Amsterdam. The head of state told his Israeli counterpart that he and Queen Máxima are "shocked by the violence against Israeli supporters who are guests in our country".
Stay informed of the developments in our live blog

"We cannot look away from anti-Semitic behavior in our streets", the king continued. "Our history has taught us how intimidation goes from bad to worse, with horrific consequences. Jews must be able to feel safe in the Netherlands, everywhere and at all times. We put our arms around them and do not let go."

President Herzog also shares something of what they discussed via social media. "We failed the Jewish community in the Netherlands during World War II, and last night we failed again," Willem-Alexander said, according to Herzog's office. The Government Information Service would neither confirm nor deny this to NU.nl.

In the conversation, Herzog demanded that the Dutch authorities "do everything they can" to ensure the safety of Jews and Israelis in the country. He also called for the immediate evacuation of all Israelis who want to return.

Several violent incidents took place in Amsterdam after the Ajax vs. Maccabi Tel Aviv football match. These were aimed at supporters of the Israeli club. Several fans were injured, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema reported on Instagram.

Five injured people were taken to hospital, the police reported. 62 people were arrested. The police also said they were aware of reports of a possible hostage situation and missing Israelis, but "currently have no confirmation that this has actually happened."

Politics condemns violence against Maccabi fans in Amsterdam, king is shocked

The violent attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam last night are widely condemned by politicians. Prime Minister Schoof and Minister Van Weel of Justice speak of targeted anti-Semitic attacks. King Willem-Alexander called Israeli President Herzog and said that he is shocked by the violence. "We cannot turn a blind eye to anti-Semitic behavior in our streets."

Prime Minister Schoof has been in contact with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and told him that the perpetrators will be tracked down and prosecuted. Israel is sending extra planes to pick up supporters from Amsterdam. Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa'ar is traveling on one of the planes.

Schoof called it macabre that the supporters were attacked around the annual commemoration of Kristallnacht, the violent pogrom against Jews in Nazi Germany on the night of November 9 to 10, 1938.

Minister Van Weel of Justice speaks of very serious anti-Semitic attacks on Israeli supporters. "People drove through the city looking for Jews. They asked: what is your nationality and where are you from? The moment someone was Israeli, he was beaten up. It doesn't get much more anti-Semitic than that."

The hotels where Israeli supporters are staying are being guarded, says Van Weel.

The Amsterdam triangle (mayor Halsema, the Public Prosecution Service and the police) says in a statement that supporters have been attacked, abused and pelted with fireworks in several places in the city, despite the massive police presence.

Mayor Halsema expressed her horror at a press conference in Amsterdam. She expressed her sympathy for the victims of the violence and spoke of "a pitch-black night". Halsema said that boys on scooters were criss-crossing the city looking for Israeli football supporters. "I understand very well that this brings back memories of pogroms."

Early next week, the triangle will come up with 'a factual report' about the violence. Later in the week, there will be a debate in the Amsterdam city council.

Match against Ajax
The Israelis were in Amsterdam for the match Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv. A total of 2,600 Israeli fans were there.

Images of Israeli supporters being chased and abused by masked men after the match are circulating on social media. They shouted "Free Palestine", among other things. It is not clear where these unverified images were taken.

The police arrested at least 62 suspects yesterday. At least five people who were attacked were taken to hospital.

Widely condemned
The attacks in Amsterdam have led to widespread outrage in political The Hague. Not only Prime Minister Schoof has expressed his condemnation, so have the faction leaders of other parties, including Wilders (PVV) and Yesilgöz (VVD).

Wilders writes on X: "It looks like a hunt for Jews in the streets of Amsterdam". He also writes: "The mayor of Amsterdam must resign today." According to him, there was insufficient police protection to prevent the violence and protect the people.

Wilders also states that "the perpetrators must leave the country". He makes a link with what he calls "the growing hatred of Jews in the Netherlands due to the ongoing mass immigration and Islamization".

Nothing is yet known about the identity of the attackers. For example, it is not clear how many there were and what their background is.

'Sick images'
Yesilgöz speaks of "incredibly sick images of the attacks on Dutch Jews and Israelis in Mokum. Pure scum, pure hatred of Jews".

NSC faction leader Vroonhoven says in a response that "the disgusting events" in Amsterdam remind her "to the darkest pages of our history".

GroenLinks-PvdA leader Timmermans calls it unacceptable that Jewish Israelis in Amsterdam are not safe and are being hunted down and attacked. That is "frightening and makes me angry".

'Shame'
D66 leader Jetten also finds the attacks appalling. "These attacks on football fans are a disgrace, whatever you think of the war."

CDA member of parliament Boswijk also speaks of an anti-Semitic attack on Israeli football fans. "80 years after the Second World War, people are hunting Jews like animals again."

BBB, SGP and ChristenUnie also condemn the violence and emphasise that Israeli fans should be welcome and safe in the Netherlands.

Dissenting voice Denk
Faction leader Van Baarle of Denk criticizes the reactions in the House of Representatives. He says that "hypocritical politicians were silent when Maccabi scum chanted racist and genocidal slogans about Gaza, destroyed Palestinian flags and attacked a taxi driver". Images circulating on social media show that Maccabi fans sang about Palestinians earlier in the evening. For example, they shouted "We'll fuck the Arabs," and "Fuck you Palestine".

King expresses condolences
King Willem-Alexander has called Israeli President Herzog to express his condolences. "Our history has taught us how intimidation goes from bad to worse, with horrific consequences. Jews must feel safe in the Netherlands, everywhere and at all times. We put our arms around them and will not let them go," according to a statement from the Royal House.

Herzog himself previously issued a statement about the conversation. In it, he states that the king, in his condemnation of the violence, drew a direct comparison with the persecution of Jews in the Netherlands during World War II. Willem-Alexander is said to have said that the Netherlands, just as during the Holocaust, has abandoned Jews.

There is no direct comparison in the statement from the Royal House.
