Zara Phillips threw her elaborately adorned hat into the fashion ring today as she arrived for the start of Royal Ascot.

The Princess turned heads in a dazzling ensemble complete with cream pussy bow blouse and a high-waisted, fifties-style black skirt, topped off with a matching over-sized rose and feather detailed millinery creation.

A frontrunner in the style stakes?! On which planet? That outfit is so unflattering.

For once I liked what Bea is wearing, even if it is a bit mature for her.

Female racegoers have been reminded of the definition of "formal day dress" at the annual Royal Ascot race meeting.

Following confusion last year, the Royal Enclosure at the Berkshire race course has reissued its strict admittance policy.

Off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps, straps of less than 1in (2.5cm) and miniskirts are "unsuitable", as are streaky fake tans.

I'm glad to see they've done this, Alot of women have looked incredibly commn in recent years.

You're right, Little Star, Zara's outfit is unflattering. She has a nice figure but she looks so frumpy in this outfit.

The York girls look like they're 30...but enough, it's nice to see royal ladies at the races.

It seems royal women haven't been much of a presence in recent years and the races weren't so colorful due to it.

Zara's head is perfect - gorgeous face, fab hair, delicious hat. But as I work my way down her ensemble, I lose the will to live.
And I don't know where to begin with the York girls. Their stylist should be clapped in irons.

These women are Windsors! They have large busts, short bodies and not much in the way of neck. They need to face up to it , just as the Queen did, buy some good shapewear and dress in a manner that reflects their structural limitations. Only then will any sense of grace and style emerge.

Skip on down to image #3 for an interesting photo of Bea.  Poor girl...if it's not an unflattering bikini it's her teeth.  She has to learn that less is more, especially in public.  'Uge looks more than a little like Carmen Miranda, that old South American movie star who wore a turban stuffed with bananas, oranges and pineapples.

Elena and Christina went throught their "less attractive years" at about the same age as Eugenie and Beatrice. They've both become much more elegant so perhaps there is hope for the York sisters. Perhaps a royal "What not to wear" intervention from the Infantas could be helpful. "Ay no! Necesitas un otra camisa chica!"

Rumour - or at least Richard Kay - has it that Kate's mother will be presented to the Queen in the Royal Enclosure, possibly tomorrow.

http://www.dailymail.co.u...s-mum-got-royal-date.html

Now it sounds here as though the Middletons will be in the Royal Enclosure as fee-paying members of the public, and may be invited to the Royal Box for a brief meet and greet. If they were guests of the Queen in the fullest sense I would consider it to be a very dark omen. (Interestingly, Kay suggests that Kate is not going to be there herself.)  Let us see what transpires.

But I can't help wondering whether this is the reason why the new sartorial code for the Royal Enclosure  - no short skirts, no spaghetti straps etc - also stipulated that there was to be no CHEWING GUM.  I love the way the article above says that Mrs Meddleton was not chewing gum at all at William's passing out parade ... she was actually "consuming an anti-nicotine preparation."

   Nicorette gum...er, anti-nicotine prep...perhaps?

I note the article says that Prince Andrew asked the Countess of Derby to give his girls some tips.  What a shame she didn't include fashion tips in her little lecture.

When you take a look at who their respective mothers are I think the odds of the York girls getting through this "phase" during their lifetime decline dramatically.

Zara is pretty but she needs to find a good bra. The men always look wonderful in the their suits. I love Ascot.
