King launches construction works of a container terminal in Casablanca port
Casablanca, Oct. 16 (MAP) - King Mohammed VI launched, Thursday, the construction works of the third container terminal in the port of Casablanca and kicked off development works of the northern road of the port, at a total cost of MAD 1.8 bln (about $ 215Mn).

The terminal project aims, inter alia, to meet the growing demand for container traffic, reduce the waiting time for ships, and ease pressure on the existing terminals.

The King kicked off, afterwards, the development works of the northern road of the Casablanca port, worth some MAD 110 mln (about $ 13 mln).

This road, to be operational by April 2010, is meant to facilitate access to the port, ensure a better flow of the facility's traffic road, and ensure a better distribution of traffic between the various gates of the port.

The port of Casablanca is one of the largest ports in Africa. It handles a traffic of over 26,3 million tons per annum, that is 36% of the national traffic. With an area of 605 hectares, the facility can accommodate and treat more than 35 ships at the same time.

King Mohammed VI chairs working session on urban development of Casablanca
Casablanca, Oct. 21 (MAP) - King Mohammed VI chaired, Tuesday in the Royal palace of Casablanca, a working session dedicated to the new urban development master plan of Casablanca.

During this session, the sovereign outlined the priorities that should be achieved before 2013.

These projects include notably the development of three urban poles in the neighborhoods of Hay Rahma, Sidi Moumen, Lahraouiyines and Anfa, building large-scale sports complex in Sidi Moumen, modernizing and improving the road network and the urban traffic network, extending the liquid sanitation network, and implementing the project to protect Casablanca from floods on Boussekoura river.

The monarch insisted on providing all the conditions to make the economic capital a competitive international metropolis before 2013.

To this end, the King gave his instructions to implement these projects according to a determined schedule, stressing the need to accelerate the pace of the implementation of these projects in a bid to meet the requirements of comprehensive and integrated development based on the proximity policy in terms of improving housing and modernizing the road network.

The sovereign also called for mobilizing a plot of land dedicated to the financial hub of Anfa region, which will become, in 2013, a tangible reality and a very important center, which will enable it to acquire a regional reputation and an international dimension.

The new master plan aims at promoting the living conditions of the populations of the largest city in Morocco, enhancing the prospects of its development and modernization, preserving its economic potential and its position as a major international metropolis and enhancing its attractiveness to investors.

The urban developments provided by this plan are also meant to improve the housing supply and meet the needs of the population, particularly low-income and middleclass families, allowing them to have decent housing and spaces provided with public facilities and social services.

The different poles planned on the periphery, including Lahraouiyne and Dar Bouazza, will be designed and developed to ensure their integration into the urban space and preserve social cohesion, which is one of the foundations of Moroccan society.

Another pole will be developed in Anfa-Aéroport area. Spanning over an area of 400 hectares, the pole will host middle-standing housing units and a regional financial center.

The master plan and urban developments will be consolidated by the implementation of a system that would mobilize modern and efficient transport means supported by an optimal organization of traffic in Casablanca.

In this respect, King Mohammed VI chaired the signing ceremony of the financing agreement of the first stretch of Casablanca tramway that will require a total of $ 750 million.

The works in the tramway project will begin before the end of next year. The first line will be 28-km long and will serve several neighborhoods of Casablanca, carrying 300,000 passengers per day.

To ensure the management and follow-up of all these projects, three bodies have been created, namely Casa Aménagement SA, l'autorité  organisatrice des transports urbains et la société Casa Transport.

Italy: Naples hosts Moroccan film festival
Naples, 9 Oct. (AKI) - A film festival featuring shorts, documentaries, cartoons and women's movies from Morocco has opened in the southern Italian city of Naples.

The festival is divided into four sections: women's cinema, Berber cinema, documentaries and fiction.

The documentaries section is dedicated to the work of Morocco's first female documentary-maker, Izza Genini.

The festival is also organising talks, debates, book readings, exhibitions, musical events and sampling of Moroccan food.

Morocco's King Mohammed VI, who succeeded his father King Hassan II at the age of 35, has nurtured Moroccan cinema, and film festivals are now held in cities all over the country.

During Mohammed VI's reign, a major cinema production centre at Ouarzazate on the edge of the southern Sahara has thrived.

More than 30 films have been made there including Martin Scorsese's epic Kundun, Jesus Of Nazareth, Gladiator, Alexander, Lawrence of Arabia and Babel, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.

Wow! those are impressive numbers! Wink Something tells me the translation didn't work quite right. Although now that they've tackled literacy they can turn their attention to math.
