I thought it makes sense to have a sinle topic on this event as various royal ladies will be attending.

WAM Abu Dhabi, Nov. 9, 2008 (WAM) -- Her Highness Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak will open here on Tuesday the 2nd Arab Women Organisation conference at the Emirates Palace Hotel.

A number of distinguished personalities, including queens, first ladies, ministers, senior officials and heads of delegations, will attend the three-day conference which is being held under the theme: "Women in the context of Human Security Issues - Arab and International Perspectives".

The conference will start with an opening address by Shaikha Fatima, to be followed by an address by the Wife of the King of Bahrain, Shaikha Sabika bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, the outgoing President of the Organisation. Other speakers include the first ladies attending the conference and followed by Dr. Wadouda Badran, Secretary General of the Arab Women Organisation (AWO).

Shaikha Fatima will launch "Media Strategy for Arab Women" and the "Network of Arab Women in the Diaspora" initiatives. She will also honour winners of the AWO research scholarship and the "Arab Women in Science and Technology for Development" award.

She will later hold at the Al-Nahr Palace a luncheon in honour of the queens, first ladies and senior officials attending the conference. She will also hold another luncheon in honour of her guests on the second day of the conference at the Rowdat Al-Reef Palace.

The conference ends on November 13 with two sessions, one in the morning and another in the evening.

Is there any distinction between being a Queen or a Sheikha? Is it just a matter of convention what they choose to call themselves or does it mean something more?

Jordan is the only Arab royalty (I think) to use the term queen, most of the other use the term sheikha because they don't recognise the concepts of queens within Islam. http://answers.yahoo.com/...qid=20071217070047AAACpV2

this is something that the customs and traditions of each country decide,Sheikha,Princess or Queen they have the same level i think, they are first ladies in their countries.
the"what they choose to call themselves" is maybe right in other hand

Thanks for the photos. It looks like Salma, Asma and Rania co-ordinated their outfits!

The shiny ptach on the middle of Salma's jacket looks bizarre, I hope it's just the light.

Salma really needs to hire a stylist. She wears high-end couture and yet still almost always there is some slight flaw with her outfits, usually the accessories.

Petra photos of Rania:
