The pictures are so awkward, their fashion style so different from ours (or the jap. fashionistas on the net), the only sign of life outside this strange stage-setting is the cute little necktie of the doggie.

I agree - it makes me so sad to see individuality stamped out like that on these kids.

Happy birthday to Aiko!

It's not just the styling. In any European country the 18th birthday of the only daughter of the Emperor would be a huge festival.

In Japan it's, well, almost forgotten.

The Japanese royals fashion and demeanor always seems so awkward to me. No individuality at all. I don't really know much about the family but I read that much of it is due to the Imperial Household Agency. I can't understand how they have so much power over the Emperor who is their boss?

Happy birthday to a wonderful young lady!

Emperor is just a title. If you've no actual means or others controlling your means, there you are.

18 isn't the same milestone in Japan, there will be more pomp and circumstance when she turns 20.

Interesting. Thanks.

I'll wait for her 20th and the big tiara party.

She will get her diamond tiara and mirror necklace on her 20th - like her cousins did. Will be interesting to see if they are recycled from the vaults or new pieces.

The photo with the puzzle actually makes me a bit angry - Aiko isnít three years old after all.  I'm also sorry that Masako isn't here.
