Akishino and Kiko attended the Autumn Memorial Service
They visited the Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery and attended the Autumn Memorial Service in Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo. In the rain, the couple offered a silent prayer after worshipping. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier contains about 370,000 pillars of unknown soldiers and civilian remains.

The Autumn Memorial Service is held annually in the middle of October by the Memorial Foundation. About 1,000 attendees took part in the Memorial Service. The memorial service is held in honour of the spirits of the soldiers, military employees, and citizens who lost their lives in war. A highlight of this service is the worship and moment of silence led by an Imperial family member.

The clothing all seems so unflattering, horribly unattractive, bulky, and badly sized to my eye, the skirts in particular seem 3 sizes too big and look uncomfortable.

I have often wondered why they wear western styles and not kimono for these rituals.

Does anyone know why carrying a fan seems to be an essential element of the most formal attire for the imperial family? I thought it was just with wafuku -- traditional Japanese attire -- but in these photos, the women are wearing very formal daytime dress and carrying fans.

Proclamation ceremony. Akishino is his brother's heir. Both heir and consort look very happy.

How is Aiko already 19?!  Shocked It feels like just a couple of years since she was that gorgous little, black haired baby. And now she’s closing in on 20.
