The clothing all seems so unflattering, horribly unattractive, bulky, and badly sized to my eye, the skirts in particular seem 3 sizes too big and look uncomfortable.

I have often wondered why they wear western styles and not kimono for these rituals.

Does anyone know why carrying a fan seems to be an essential element of the most formal attire for the imperial family? I thought it was just with wafuku -- traditional Japanese attire -- but in these photos, the women are wearing very formal daytime dress and carrying fans.

How is Aiko already 19?! It feels like just a couple of years since she was that gorgous little, black haired baby. And now she’s closing in on 20.
