January 16, 2020, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and other members of the Japanese royal family attended the New Year's Poetry Reading Ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Crown Prince Fumihito, Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Mako and Princess Kako were present at the ceremony. In his poem, Emperor Naruhito expressed his hope for a bright future for children at the first annual New Year Poetry Reading Ceremony held after his coronation that took place last year. The theme of this year's "waka" poems was "nozomi" meaning "hope".

All the ladies look very elegant and very unhappy, bored, or just resting-neutral-face. The tablecloths that look like washi paper are gorgeous.

Looks pretty standard, although Princess Yoko is missing, I wonder what's up with that.

Aside from Masako they all look like they're attending a funeral. Must be a japanese thing.

The ladies look very gracious and composed, and I love the soft clear colours of their gowns.  Champagne

January 27
Princess Kako attended the 42nd Meeting to Honor Mothers Who Raised Hearing Impaired Children, held at Kensei Kinenkan Hall (Parliamentary Museum) in Chiyoda, Tokyo.
Princess Kiko used to attend this meeting held every year. Princess Kako started to accompany her in 2014. This year, Princess Kako attended the meeting without her mother. Like her mother Princess Kiko, Princess Kako is fluent in sign language, attending events to support the deaf.

Kako is a charmer, such a happy demeanor.   I wish I had that, instead of resting bitch face.

Lovely princess.
Such a pity and a waste !! All these  Japanese princesses do a magnificent job and they get kicked out and erased from the family register  if (they are allowed to) marry. I feel so sorry for her sister.

ITA. Sadly I don't have much hope that this will change any time soon.

Former Emperor Akihito temporarily lost consciousness and collapsed at his Tokyo residence on Wednesday but a subsequent medical checkup found no abnormalities, the Imperial Household Agency said Thursday.

It is said that the Emperor collapsed at 6:30 pm on the 29th at his home in Fukiage-Sendong Imperial Palace and temporarily lost consciousness. This means that the Empress who was nearby called a physician with an emergency buzzer while supporting the Emperor's body, and after a while after starting the examination, the Emperor returned to consciousness.

Isn't Michiko undergoing treatments too? I'm praying for the health of these two.

That's bad. I hope it's nothing too serious, but sadly both don't look very healthy.
