Last weekend we drove Juliet de Verona back to College in Burlington, VT. It was so damn cold that the washer fluid in the car froze solid. We had to stop at the dealership 1/3 of the way up for the car to sit and thaw for 90 minutes. It then froze over night again before our return. We had had a snow so the road was wet with runoff and anti icing mix. After a short period of time you couldn't see out the windshield. I am Summer's child. A show jumping, scuba diving, golfing girl. I would not be able to winter up there. But Juliet loves it.

My nick of the woods has extreme weather warnings this weekend: A polar vortex meets Sahara winds. Rather rare phenomena but it causes rather strange conditions. The north will get lots of snow (and they aren't used to snow at all) the middle gets ice storms and the south gets the warm winds with sand in the air, turning the sky reddish yellow and dark. But it is at least rather warm. When rain mixes with the Sahara sand, it is called blood rain. Weird eh?
You called it Fairy. I don't know about the rest of the country but one of the bird feeder cams I look at is in the north of your neck of the woods and they got at least a good foot of snow between last night and this afternoon. DOV . . . three season or winter washer fluid . . . . just sayin. I can remember our fuel line freezing up on Christmas Day in '83. Only time that has ever happened. I can also remember it being -4 high and the flat coat still wanted to go out and play fetch in the snow. You either bundle up or deal with a large stir crazy dog. The polar vortex has arrived but the really cold weather - single digit highs and below zero lows with the accompanying really nasty wind chills - are on tap for the end of the week.

Oh, we had the washer fluid additive! In the Audi Q7 apparently the fine German engineering runs the line from the reservoir right to the bumper and along the outside of the engine. Nothing like a 90 minute defrost stop 30 miles out of the way in each direction to go to the dealership. It took us to just over Great Barrington MA 30 miles east. Luckily this afforded us a luxurious lunch at Panera while we waited for an hour and a half before driving 4 hours further. I certainly was not putting her through 2 international airports, so we were driving.

Audi is headquartered in the south of Germany, they do get snw, but seriously if the temps drop beneath -7celsius in the night(!) Germany calls it a weather emergency. So real cold... not. Winter-trials are done either in northern Sweden or in the high Sierrra Nevada, and the german engineers all show up in stylish ski-outfits, better equipped for a fun outdoor sport in the close proximaty of an Apres-ski-hut in a touristy Alpine resort... I remember my Bro-in-law once joined us for a winter vac and he had an Audi (those are great car really.. to speed on the german autobahn in good weather) and his Diesel froze...
Right now, the snow drops are coming out, the trails in the woods where I walk the Fairy Springer are muddy like hell (can anybody even imagine how a springer looks after such a terrific walk?)...and the temps are moderate. I am not a particular winter fan, I like moderate climate, neither hot and humid nor icy cold. So actually I am fine...

More snow falling on the feeder - located in Recke, btw.
The truck has a diesel engine so we plug in the engine block heater during the winter.
Lord L would love to drive the autobahn sometime.

The Netherlands are currently facing a large cold front. The past Sunday and Monday plenty of snow fell in the Netherlands (ok, in some areas more then others). Including a very very cold wind, which made it even feel much colder. The amount of snow will decline, no downfall expected anymore. But both during the day and night it is freezing. In the night even managing to reach record temperatures. For many countries around the globe and especially Canada, Russia and the US this is very common. In contrary the Netherlands and its inhabitants weren't used to this kind of weather (anymore). Some even have the hope an Elfstedentocht will be possible again, even despite the Corona measurements. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ElfstedentochtI don't have a car and commute by public transport. Due to the weather the trains and busses were less, or not even riding at all. Because of this I am working at home yesterday and today. Because of Corona we were already pushed to work at home as much as possible. But due to my personal circumstances and my manager I have been more at the office then not (and I even have a 1 hour & 15 min travel oneway). Working at home has it's pros (buissiness and private), but I perform much better when at the office.

This caught my eye on the AP website this morning: Plume of Sahara dust caused spike in European air pollution https://apnews.com/articl...c92022bee7b0fe5f907aa561bThe accompanying pictures show the dust in the atmosphere and on the snow.

In Dutch we have sayings such as "Maart roert zijn staart"( March stirs its tail) and "April doet wat hij wil" (April does what he wants). Because at the end of March we had very nice spring weather (also warm temperatures). But suddenly early April we had strong winds, (wet) snow and rain. Even hail and thunder was noticed.

Stay safe and hope all is well my fellow New England/north east dishers! Hopefully Henri doesn't cause too much havoc, I know he just made landfall in Rhode Island I echo whiplashhx's sentiments, hope everyone up there is safe and there is minimal damage and no loss of life. I've been tracking Henri since he was a wee little yellow x over near Bermuda - he's had a very strange track for a tropical storm/hurricane, churning a circle around Bermuda before heading north to New England. Now it shows him heading to the New York/ Massachescetts border before turning east.

We were supposed to attend a housewarming/wedding party this week for one of my stepdaughters but it got called off due to Covid. And now this hurricane. I feel awful for her.

Here in the Hudson Valley it was raining hard earlier but seems to have stopped for the last hour .... some gusts of wind but not excessive. Touch wood it's not as dire as the weathermen were predicting.

Didn't know where else to put this, and it's not the weather where I am, but I hope that all you Dishers in Eastern Canada stay safe with Hurricane Fiona coming in fast. Will be keeping you (and the poor Sable Island ponies) in my thoughts.

Here in Northern California the weather is absolutely perfect today. 79 degrees F. 26 C. Pleasant, warm, not too warm, clear, just after much needed rain last weekend.
