North Texas fricking freezing for the way our homes are insulated. Monday the windchill was -5 F. My pregnant daughter’s house pipes froze ( she lives in a 100 year old pier and beam- their first year there and didn’t listen to parental advice lol). So she, her partner and my grandson have been here until today Saturday when the plumber actually made it out.  My 1990’s house was fine. Texans aren’t great in cold weather.

Below zero F (~18C) last week at daytime, with windchill between -11F (~-24C) and -22F (~-31C). Lower air temperature at night with similar and slightly higher wind speeds because another front was moving closer. Did not go outside at all, the postal carrier held the mail for 3 days because some mailboxes were frozen. The building is creaking with the cold & wind.

It's been 4 years since temps were this low with similar wind speeds. The last time though, I bundled up on a sunny day, covered all exposed skin, wore snow goggles and trekked 2.5 miles (4 km) to a local forest preserve that has a lake. All the ice fishermen(& women) were out in tents over their fishing holes in the ice which was 15" (38 cm) thick. So I walked across the lake and got to look at the forest from the middle of it. Took a few pictures and then went home.

However, I did not take any walks this time because blowing snow made it difficult to be seen crossing the roads. Stayed at home, read a bit, watched some PBS programs/series I had missed, made some soups, stew, and pan biscuits and then repeated it. Forecast is for one more day of below zero conditions and then a thaw.  Smiley Let the dripping from melting snow begin.

[Wind Chill is a term used to describe what the air temperature feels like to the human skin due to the combination of cold temperatures and winds blowing on exposed skin. The calculation will tell you how long it will take to get frostbite on exposed skin.]

I opened my vent a crack during the cold, just so my room didn’t completely freeze overnight while I slept.

Today I went out to check out the winter fleet, the ships that come in and rest for the winter in the Great Lakes.

cordtx & genegal: imagine the ice cube icon placed here, along with the wind blowing icon.

Wet weather up and down the CA coast.  Hopefully it means snow in the Sierras.

I escaped the 15* weather in NY to come to Florida for a little bit. The first night as I got off the plane it was 48*. Yesterday I had on a fleece and a down jacket both zipped up to my chin.  Today it’s about 68 but WINDY. I’m on the 5th floor and the pine trees off the terrace are whipping around in the wind like they are made of paper

I escaped the 15* weather in NY to come to Florida for a little bit. The first night as I got off the plane it was 48*.

The cold snap really reached deep into the continent.  The temperature went up to 32F (0C) with heavy winds on Monday, from minus 0F.  Temps between 28-30F. Wet snow fell, sticking on everything, especially the pavement and turning to ice: idewalks, stairs, windows, and doors. Misty, light rain on top the ice started all the fun -- it's been a case of 'bumper cars' with vehicles sliding on the road, off the road, spinning on turns. The news videos of SUVs sliding and spinning were common. I stayed home and off the roads because I could. More of the same for the next couple of days with some fog thrown in to make driving even more interesting. :|

Two weeks after the very cold below freezing temperatures, it's 45 to 53 F (7 to 11.5 C) daytime, 27F (2.8C) nighttime. Lots of sun. Great for walking. All snow is melted and some of the plants are budding in the garden. No doubt there will be one more snow storm but the sunny warmer weather is appreciated. Smiley

It's very cool to see snow.

In Wisconsin we're in our Fool's Spring season.

We’re in the middle of a heatwave in Western Australia! It was 42C (117.6F) here on Saturday, and it has been over 38C (100F) all week! Very much ready for summer to be over
