It's unseasonably warm where I am - got over 80F yesterday. I was in shorts and a t-shirt walking the dog, the flowers a blooming everywhere. Makes me nervous for what summer might be like but I'm also enjoying having the windows open all day!

It was sunny and in the 70's and low 80's starting last Tuesday until a front came through yesterday. Now it's snowing. It's not sticking of course, but still.  The Magnolia tree looks forlorn. |

Here we have neither the cold weather blizzards (thank God) nor the "watch the wildflowers bloom". It is downright nasty: just bla cold, grey and in between windy and rainy... My tulips are out, but since nobody goes into the backyard their beauty fades unseen and un-admired... |

One daughter, one sister and one nephew all in the path of the oncoming hurricane in Southern California. Fortunately, two of them are on relatively high ground, but the nephew is on his five-acre farm in the middle of the high desert, which may generally get only 10" of rain a year. He's strong, smart and sensible, but I will quit worrying only when the hurricane has passed on through, which won't be until tomorrow morning. I think.
I lived through many hurricanes in my time of living in Florida -- Donna hit two weeks after we moved to Florida and that was a killer storm -- and, later, in Louisiana. I was only 75 miles north of New Orleans when Katrina came ashore, and many of my friends lost everything but their lives in that one. If you're interested, maybe I'll post a story I wrote in the aftermath of Katrina. It's kind of quirky, I must warn you . . . .

Our son stayed home from our weekend trip to Yosemite and fortunately didn't have to work yesterday. He said the rain was heaviest around 3pm in our part of Los Angeles Co. (South Bay). Our city was handing out sandbags in preparation. LAUSD and some of the other school districts and universities who were set to begin classes today, are having a virtual day to keep people of the streets and freeways.
Also there was a 5.1 earthquake in Ojai, CA yesterday that many of my neighbors felt, but my son slept through it.
We returned yesterday from the trip due to thunderstorms in the park. It was very rainy from Fresno and all the way south on the 99 and the 5/405. We saw at least 3 overturned vehicles on the way home, but fortunately the occupants appeared to be uninjured. We could feel our tires starting to hydroplane now and then, so my husband was driving at a safe speed.

We have had lots of snow, very very unusual for the part of Germany where I am living. Problem is that nobody cared for cleaning the pathwalks. It has snowed and than got wet and freezed.
If you go outside as a pedestrian you take the risk of falling on the icy street and breaking your bones!
I am really upset about this, haven't been outside for two days and fortunately had enough groceries at home.
My daughter is presently on a flight to New York, I hope very much that she has better conditions there than here.

Rain rain rain rain rain rain here in Northern California, for which we are very grateful. The hills surrounding the Bay Area are once more covered with green velvet after the first winter rains banished the dry brown color. Saw the first California poppies of the season in full bloom yesterday and my paperwhite narcissus have been blooming ever since Halloween. The freesias are coming up but I haven't seen any buds yet. And the ``volunteer'' nasturtiums -- from seeds dropped last year in the garden -- are gigantic. And would you believe I just ate three cherry tomatoes from the plant right outside my front door that didn't get around to producing any tomatoes last year until August?
We have a weird season I always call ``winterspring'' because spring starts the minute we get rain, and that could be as early as late October. It lasts through May and then we get ``June gloom,'' which is several foggy months until the real heat of summer begins in August through October.
