Plans for luxury apartments at Soestdijk Palace may not go ahead

By our entertainment editors
Jan 24, 2024

Local residents and organizations that object to the redevelopment plans of Soestdijk Palace in Baarn have been vindicated by the Council of State. It ruled on Wednesday that the plans would not go ahead and the zoning plan would have to be re-examined.
The new owner, MeyerBergman Erfgoed Groep, wanted to restore the former residential palace of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard and make it accessible to the public. In addition, the intention was to build luxury apartments, a hotel and catering facilities on the estate.

Local residents and nature organizations are against the plans and have filed objections. They fear, among other things, nuisance and damage to the special nature on the 350-year-old estate. There was a lot of discussion about the apartments in particular, because, according to the objectors, too much nature is being lost as a result.

The municipality of Baarn calls the annulment of the zoning plan by the Council of State "a big disappointment." The municipality cannot yet say what the ruling of the highest administrative court exactly means for the future of the site. “The municipality will study the ruling in the coming days to determine the next steps, which will be discussed with all those involved.”

Palace owner 'didn't expect decision at all'
In 2022, a large majority of the Baarn municipal council agreed to the zoning plan. This outlines the main lines within which the estate may be developed. But thanks to the objection, the MeyerBergman Heritage Group can no longer carry out its plans.

The owner of the estate says that he "did not expect the decision of the Council of State at all". The company says it is unfortunate that the plans made will not go ahead.

The Netherlands Birds of Prey working group and the Eemvallei Conservation Foundation are happy that the Council of State has annulled the zoning plan. The nature organizations are among the eleven objectors who challenged the municipality of Baarn's plan because, among other things, they feared that it would damage nature. Now that they have been proven right, they hope that the estate will be given a different purpose that has less impact on the environment.

Vietnam postpones Willem-Alexander's state visit at the last minute

The state visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima to Vietnam has been postponed at the request of the Vietnamese. The reason is Vietnam's internal affairs. What they are has not been revealed.

The king and queen would be in Vietnam from March 19 to 22, at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong. New dates have not yet been announced.

The Netherlands has maintained a diplomatic relationship with the country for 51 years. There is also cooperation in the economic field. For Vietnam, the Netherlands is the most important export country in Europe and the Netherlands is the most important European investor in Vietnam.

Two economic missions would also travel with the royal couple: one led by Minister Van der Wal for Nature and Nitrogen, the other led by Minister Harbers of Infrastructure and Water Management.

Southeast Asia Correspondent Mustafa Marghadi:
"It comes as a complete surprise that the state visit was canceled at the last minute. The mention of 'domestic reasons' causes a lot of speculation. It is quite quiet in Vietnam. Several political dissidents were arrested at the beginning of the year But there is no social unrest.

The first and only thing that comes to mind when such a prestigious visit is canceled so late is that the health of Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong (79) has deteriorated considerably.

The leader of the Communist Party has been struggling with his health for months. In January he skipped a visit by Indonesian President Joko Widodo due to health problems. He also stayed in the hospital for a while. The leadership of the Communist Party is not very forthcoming with information about Trong's health. So we cannot say with certainty that the deterioration of his health would be the reason for canceling the state visit."

Heirs of Hindustani contract workers want an apology

Descendants of Surinamese-Hindustani contract workers demand an apology from King Willem-Alexander for the Dutch role in the colonial past. Four representatives of the community wrote this in a letter to the king.

After the abolition of slavery, the Netherlands brought people from India to Suriname to keep the plantation economy going. There they worked as contract workers under miserable conditions. Javanese and Chinese were also brought to Suriname.

"It is high time for a just recognition and apology towards the Hindustani descendants," the authors write in the letter on behalf of the heirs of Hindustani people who worked in Suriname. “For more than 150 years, victims and their heirs have been waiting for an apology.”

Indentured servitude
In 1873, the Netherlands finally put an end to slavery. To prevent a shortage of cheap labor, King William III entered into an agreement with the British government in 1872 to bring workers from India. This happened for the first time a year later and would continue until 1916. A total of 34,000 Hindustanis from India came to Suriname. They entered into a five-year contract and were called indentured servants and 'coolies'.

Once in Suriname, the contract workers were often given heavy work for meager pay: 10 to 15 cents per day (by modern standards, at most a few euros). They worked long hours and were punished if they did not do their job properly. The workers were given a five-year contract. Then they could return home. The majority decided to stay.

To the outside world, the work was presented as a normal working relationship, but according to the authors, this disguised a system of exploitation, torture and even murder. "The Netherlands has led the entire world astray," the letter says. “The Hindustani indentured servants were treated as nothing more than substitute slaves.”

Radjinder Bhagwanbali, author of the letter, says that he has been researching the history of his ancestors and the injustice they have endured since 1981. He was promoted for that. "For this reason I say: indentured labor is also slavery. Indentured servants did the same work as enslaved people on plantations. The punishments were identical. If the workers did not perform, they were tortured, sometimes even whipped thirty times. "

According to Bhagwanbali, the choice to go to Suriname was also not always voluntary. For example, he writes in his dissertation that many Hindustani people received incorrect or misleading information about what awaited them.

Slavery excuses
The apology that the king offered last year for the Netherlands' slavery past was about the transatlantic slave trade, but not about indentured labor and the rest of the Netherlands' colonial history.

“The call for apologies for Hindustani history is increasing,” says Danny Soekarnsingh, inclusion and diversity advisor at the municipality of Amsterdam and expert in colonial history. "There is rightly a lot of attention for the history of slavery from the emancipation movement of black Dutch communities, but contract labor was not included. That was a continuation of slavery, just like the Javanese and Chinese history in Suriname."

As a result, part of history remained underexposed, says Soekarnsingh. "While they actually strengthen each other in the recognition of Dutch colonial injustice." According to him, that injustice should lead to a "comprehensive apology".

Ruben Gowricharn, professor of Hindustani diaspora studies at the Vrije Universiteit, says that a lot has happened and a lot has been "hidden" in the history of the indentured servants, but that it was not slavery. He wants to put the community's allegations into perspective. "It is often forgotten that during the same period Dutch workers and farmers were sometimes in worse circumstances."

Author Radjinder Bhagwanbali says that the excuses for the past of slavery are not sufficient for Hindustani history. "You must apologize for all wrongs against humanity. You have indeed caused this suffering to the African people, but you forget one thing: you also did this to the Hindustani and Javanese."

Former government aircraft KBX, a Fokker 70, for sale again

A Fokker 70, beloved by Dutch aviation fanatics and royal family enthusiasts, has recently been put up for sale again. The former government aircraft was used by the government and members of the royal family for 21 years under the name PH-KBX. Willem-Alexander flew it during his time as crown prince.

The Dutch-made aircraft was sold to Alliance Airlines in Australia in 2017. That company paid 3.7 million euros for it and used it as a VIP device for seven years. The airline recently decided to sell the Fokker. It is unclear how much the device will yield.

Closed envelope
"The aircraft is being sold on the basis of a bid in a closed envelope," says Peter van Oostrum on behalf of the Fokker Services Group. The Netherlands-based maintenance company was hired for this job by the Australian airline.

“The envelopes, digital or physical, will be opened in Sydney on May 15 and the highest bid will win.” There is concrete interest from Europe and Africa, says Van Oostrum. These are not private individuals or museums, but airlines, for example. "These are mainly operators who have experience with Fokker aircraft. Because it is a fairly unique aircraft."

In 1996, the Dutch aircraft manufacturer went bankrupt. That year the PH-KBX was put into use. The Fokker F-70 Executive Jet had modern communication tools for that time, such as a fax and satellite telephone, the government reports. There was a conference lounge with fourteen chairs that could be converted into beds. The price tag: 75 million guilders.

The aircraft was renovated in 2010 to meet the latest safety requirements. In addition, internet access was also possible on board. A few years later the aircraft was sold because KLM Cityhopper no longer flew the Fokker 70. This meant that the expertise required for maintenance disappeared.

9000 flight hours
According to Van Oostrum, the aircraft has completed less than 9,000 flying hours. "Its lifespan is officially 90,000 flight hours, so in that respect it is still relatively young," says Van Oostrum as a good salesman. "The aircraft looks nice, but there is some deferred maintenance." With some investments, he believes, the box can last for many years to come.

King thanks Spain for hosting Amalia: 'Moving proof of friendship'

By our news editors

Update: 4 days ago

King Willem-Alexander thanked King Felipe of Spain on Wednesday for allowing Princess Amalia to live and study in Madrid for a year. Willem-Alexander said this in his speech at the state banquet in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.

The king called the help given by his Spanish colleague "a moving proof of friendship in a difficult time".

In October 2022 it became clear that Amalia was dealing with threats. As a result, she could no longer live at home. On Tuesday it was announced that Amalia had spent a long time in Madrid due to the serious threats. She would have had more freedom of movement in the Spanish capital.

Amalia now lives in Amsterdam again. The threat has not yet disappeared, but thanks to measures she can live and study in the Netherlands. It is not known what those measures are.

'A visit to Spain feels like a warm embrace'
The princess herself was also present at the state banquet on Wednesday. It was the first time that Amalia took part in an incoming state visit.

"A visit to Spain always feels like a warm embrace. Not only for us, but also for our eldest daughter," Willem-Alexander said in his speech. "Last year, due to circumstances, she had to live in Madrid. This was made possible by the kind efforts of many of your compatriots and yourself. I would like to thank you and everyone else who helped to arrange this."

The king also said in his speech that he and Queen Máxima have close personal ties with Felipe and his wife Queen Letizia. "We see each other regularly. The only thing missing was a state visit," the king said.

Spain also has a "special place" in the hearts of the royal couple, because the spark between the king and queen flew in Seville 25 years ago. “And the rest is history.”
