Yes, the veil in combination with the Barbie make-up was not the best choice. But she’s allowed to make mistakes.
I am also a bit conflicted about Amalia being there. On one hand, her attendance confirms that Willem-Alexander took it seriously when he apologised on behalf of his family and predecessors for not sooner acknowledging the suffering of the Jewish people during the German occupation of the Netherlands. The fact that both the head of state and his heir remembered the brutal torture and murder of so many innocent men, women and children at the hell where these events took place is really significant.
On the other hand, I am still confused as to why Amalia still has not attended the commemorations on Remembrance Day (4th of May) in the Netherlands. She has an important role to play there on behalf of her generation. I think if would been wise if she had attended the ceremony on Dam Square a couple of times first, before going abroad.
Yes and no. She is entitled to mistakes. On the other hand, she is not 13. This is a sombre occasion. Common sense would have told her that her make-up is not suitable. But then - Max is totally tone-deaf there as well.
I think it is good that she is there. This day will always be a special day, also, after the few old people that were inmates are dead it is even more important to keep the memory alive. However, there was no reason not to attend the Dutch Rememberance Day as well.
