I was wondering, has the monarchy in Morocco been as open about the duties of a Queen-consort as before? Truthfully I have only been aware of the monarchy's existence after Lalla Salma came into the picture.

They have not been nearly so open.  The current king's mother has never had any kind of public profile and I don't think she even has a title.

The gorgeous Lalla Salma has the title of Princess - there has never been a queen of Morocco.

In the past, the wife of the King was referred to only as "Mother of the Princes".

Thx for that UB; I didn't know exactly what she was called, but knew it wasn't the "standard" king or queen.

I believe the mother of the current king is a Berber.

Thanks.... I didn't know if the title "Lalla" meant Queen as I was going by King Mohammed.

"The Berbers are an ethnic group indigenous to North Africa west of the Nile Valley. They speak various Berber languages."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berber_people

They are not Arabs (they are Muslim).  In Morocco, Berbers are the largest ethnice group, followed by Arabs.

Thanks Macaw, very interesting.

Just wonder if the mother of current king is the first Berber lady as "mother of the princes", (I think it's difficult to know it since people don't heard much about Kings' wives before Mohammed VI.

Lalla = Lady. She has the same title as her sisters-in-law. The MRF would never give the title of Queen because of the fact that they follow the concept that in Islam there is no such thing as a "Queen".

The King's mother was not known in public at all, so Salma's introduction to the people is obvioulsy very different and a huge change from the past. Personally I think the King had rather shrewd ideas behind it, he wanted to appear to "modernise" without actually doing so.....
