I've just read about that 

Since 1922 and 1991 only the male members of the royal family attended the opening of the parliament. From 1991 until now Sonja has attended as well so MM attendance I suppose is not considered necessary  Smiley

Why not?  It's never been the custom for the Crown Princess to attend in Norway; that's why Sonja herself didn't start coming until 1991 when she became Queen.  It hasn't got anything to do with Mette-Marit personally.

I'm not sure Haakon deserves to be scolded, unless the engine was left on at his direction.  And considering that Haakon appeared to take the Scandi heirs' climate trip the most seriously of the three and has purchased and been seen driving environmentally friendly cars, I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt that he didn't sanction that.   

The palace spokesman said there's no policy that engines be kept running while the royals are performing their duties, so this sounds like the driver being an idiot to me.
