According to the English wiki : She has a sister and two older brothers,

Apparently also some step siblings.

Per Høiby (born 1962) is a Norwegian business executive. He is the CEO of the PR agency First House.Høiby is the older brother of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and the son of Sven O. Høiby. He was married to Wenke Lindal Høiby. In 2014, he married Louise Dedichen.

Espen Bjarte Høiby (born 1959) is a Norwegian businessman and former aviator. Høiby is the brother of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and the son of Sven O. Høiby and Marit Tjessem. He has been married to Renate Jonassen Høiby since 2006.

I wasn't able yet to get some real info about the sister.

Apparently she is named Kristin Høiby Bjørnøy and seems to be listed on IMBD. But  besides some mentions, gossip, pictures and such I couldn't find 'real info' about her

One of the brothers were convicted of beating his partner IIRC.

I think it was Espen and it happened around the time MM came on the scene. If I recall right it happend on his 40th birthday - he kicked his girlfriend, she fell and broke a finger or something like that. In court it was claimed that he kicked her again after she fell. He claimed that he was pretty stressed out because of all the media attention the hole family got. Let's give him the benefit of doubt that he was not a habitual women abuser like his nephew seems to be. Of course it was wrong, but it happened 22 years ago and there do not seem any further convictions.

Both brothers appear to be successful in their professional careers. It again indicates that there were mainly educated middle class values promoted in the family, both parents had an education. We can't say anything about the sister, but she looks healthy and normal, if she had gone terrible wrong (drugs, alcohol, ...) she would not look like that, so I make the bold claim that her life was very normal. We can't find anything about her which means she cleverly stayed out of the limelight all these years as she still seems to live in Norway. That, IMO, also indicates that she leads a pretty normal life.

MM was born in 1973, the parents divorced in 1984, I think her brothers are older than her, so the parents must have been married for nearly 20 years, I guess.

I would assume it was a pretty normal family. After all, you only have four children if you enjoy parenting and family life. The mom seems to have stayed in one place, Kristiansand all her life.
The mother later remarried after the divorce, one of her second husband's sons was a policeman or security guard and was shot in the assassination attempt, which probably saved his own son on the island. I remember MM being very upset at his funeral, which IMO indicates among other things that the step-siblings shared a bond and the patchwork constellation worked within the family, even though they were surely nearly grown-up after their parents married.

MM's mom's second husband died after well over a decade of marriage and a few years later she presented a new partner, who died recently of old age. Both men she was with after husband #1 seemed very normal (behaviour and look wise) from the glimpses we saw and she seemed very steady in her relationships. Both men seemed to have lead a very normal life and stayed out of the royal circus.

So let's assume it was MM's dad who -forever what reason- lost the plot and they divorced and he showed all kind of "funny" behaviour afterwards which might have well been the reason that marriage ended. MM seems to have had a lot of positive influence in her lives, God knows why she chose the path she chose and surrounded herself with criminals while she lived in Oslo.

Kristin Høiby has worked at the theatre and concert building in Kristiansand for many years. She is very low key and when family has been interviewd it has usually been the mother or the brothers who I guess have much more outward-facing jobs and especially Per is very used to press.

Espen Høiby was a pilot for many years before his current job, he has two or three children with his new wife including a son that is severly handcapped, he has talked about the joys and sorrows of that in an interview.  He and his son have sometimes attended that soccer game at Skaugum between famous soccerplayers, the royals and people with disabilities, but they have usually not been photographed, and their privacy has been respected and it was not written about until he gave an interview about it. When Haakon and Mette-Marit was on hooneymoon during 9/11 in NY he flew to NY to accompany them home because of her fear of flying, and I belive he also recomended the program she attended to get over it.

Per Høiby was in the military for many years and and adjutant for King Harald and military aid to the minister of deffense, he is now married to Norways highest ranking woman in the navy vice admiral Louise Dedichsen. He is now retiering from the PR firm he has headed, the most famous  PR firm in Norway.

Mette-Marit has said of her family:

I grew up in a poster family for success. All of us who lived in the house knew it wasn't true, but that's how we looked. Today I can say that I am happy to have that experience with me, when after all things went well for us, she writes.

I belive she is thinking of that her father was an alcholic.

All three siblings are divorced from the partner they had in the wedding of Haakon and Mette-Marit, and the brothers are remarried.

I do not think Mette- Marit was especially close to the step brother who died at Utøya, the step brothers were in some argument with her mother over property/inheritance after Marits second husband died. Everyone  in the country was in shock and upset after the Utøya massacre.

I will never not be amazed by many Scandinavians' ability to tan very deeply. Anyway. I can see that MM sees her family as a success story ("look not a one of my siblings is unemployed or controlled by the bottle") but alcoholic family members and their victims and/or enablers have a way of imprinting themselves and their issues onto others. Without addressing the problem and looking at the superficial you are making things worse. Looking the other way may have been a survival technique in her childhood but that approach to her own child is clearly not the right way to deal with his major issues nor is it responsive to the very elevated and public role MM has in life.

That is her personal perception, it also could be a kind of excuse: "Yes, we are looking good at the outside, but hej, let me tell you, there is a very dark side ...". At the time of her engagement there was a very split opinion whether it was good that she seemed to have a rather normal background and still went down a wrong lane or if that was especially concerning.

I thought that was another picture of Espen? But I am not sure.

The career biographies of her siblings suggest that all of them were able to leverage their education to secure good and meaningful jobs – with the exception of MM. The two brothers, in particular, seem to have achieved well above average success. What I find admirable about them is how they’ve managed to keep such a low profile throughout the years. They seem pretty normal and likeable people.

As for their marriages: It's interesting that all of them are divorced, almost like in the British royal family. However, if the men were focused on their careers, this could have contributed to their marriages falling apart – as a professional pilot, for instance, one doesn't spend much time at home, which can put significant strain on a relationship. It's also interesting that Per married a high-achieving wife. He seems very determined, and it's funny how siblings can be so different in their life choices.

On the other hand, MM appears to have received a full care package with her marriage. She has interesting contacts she is using, even if they are debatable, has no problem using her diplomatic passport on private missions and she has money, also to raise Marius in a very luxerious life style well into adulthood. I imagine many men wouldn't tolerate a wife who stays at home with some health excuses, engaging in personal hobbies like doing pottery and weaving, while leaving the responsibility of working and providing for the family entirely to him without caring about his needs. (He must feel very lonely on some of these trips). Furthermore, most men would not continue to financially support a stepchild way into adulthood, especially after the child and his friends ransacked the house. So, Haakon must either be completely besotted by her, make very few demands in a marriage – or perhaps a combination of both. I would say that most men would not put up with it and put down their foot at one point - which might lead to divorce. So she is just incredibly lucky.

In fairness, MM seems to be the youngest, and if the father developed an alcohol problem towards the end of the marriage, she would likely have been the most affected by it. Her brothers appear to be about 10 years older than her, so there may not have been much contact between them. By the time she reached late childhood, they had probably already moved out.

Her sister looks exactly like her. If she weren't bleaching her hair, it would be difficult to tell them apart.

Loosely translated as:

Norwegian Queen Sonja has received a pacemaker

By our entertainment editors

Jan 16, 2025 at 11:17 AM
Update: 5 hours ago

Norwegian Queen Sonja's pacemaker has been successfully placed. The 87-year-old monarch will have to stay in the hospital for one or two more days, the Norwegian court reported on Thursday morning.

The court also reports that Sonja is doing well. King Harald's wife was briefly in the hospital for observation last weekend due to an irregular heartbeat. The queen went back to the hospital on Wednesday evening for her operation.

King Harald also received a pacemaker last year. The king had become ill during a holiday in Malaysia and had to undergo surgery upon returning home.

The 87-year-old Harald has been king since 1991 and is currently the oldest monarch in Europe. He has been admitted more often in recent years due to infections and has previously undergone heart surgery.

Good that she is better.

About their weird family dynamics. I often wonder whether ML and Haakon aren't even more similar than it seems.

ML lives her extroversion very openly and is very odd at times "talking to angels", marrying the shamane, ... .
Haakon shies away from this conflict, but has married a very controversial woman. If he was as staid as he pretends to be, he wouldn't have been interested in her. Hence the question of whether he doesn't see MM as his alter ego, who acts out on his behalf, while he has the charm of a vacuum cleaner salesman, but stays within his limits.
