King George V's father, King Edward VII and Princess Victoria Mary of Teck were second cousins. George and Mary wsere second cousins once removed.

Twice --Victoria Mary of Teck was also a second cousin of her mother-in-law, through the Hesse-Cassel line.

I always found it odd --she was too royal to marry a British aristocrat, but too morganatic to marry a German prince.  Her brother, on the other hand, married a British aristocrat.  I guess Lady Margaret Grosvenor's money was perfectly acceptable and ebengeburtig.

I don't think she would have had any influence over him.  He ended up with another woman with some dubious ancestry:  Dona's grandmother was *only* a countess (the horror!).

Wilhelm did like Princess Elizabeth of Hesse and by Rhine. She became a Russian Grand Duchess when she married Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia.

I know, but in terms of strengthening ties with other Royal Houses she was also a nobody (though probably a step higher than Auguste Viktoria).
