King Edward VII did issue a Royal Warrant and an entry was made in the London Gazette on April 3, 1906 elevating Victoria from Her Highness to Her Royal Highness so as to avoid any issues, especially in Spain, of an unequal and therefore morganatic marriage.

Was it necessary for Victoria Eugenie to give up her rights to the British throne upon her engagement and marriage to King Alfonso XIII of Spain?

I think so, since she had to convert to Catholicism and that’s a deal breaker.

Victoria Eugenie would have been quite far down in the order of succession. After all, her mother Princess Beatrice was the youngest child of Queen Victoria. Also three brothers would have been before Victoria Eugenie in the order of succession.

That’s very true, she had a number of people ahead of her. But I think anyone who converts to Catholicism loses their spot in the succession, regardless of how far down they are.

I’m sure she didn’t mind, since she converted to become Queen of Spain.

Alfonso, Prince of Asturias (1907-1938) was the heir apparent to the throne of Spain from birth until he renounced his rights in 1933. He was the eldest son of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie.

I've noticed that many sad Queens/Princesses throughout history looked especially regal, beautiful etc...maybe to compensate some for their misery.

VE also aged really well.

In 1905 Princess Victoria Eugenie became the object of affection for Grand Duke Boris of Russia during a trip to the South of France.
