Tsar Simeon I of Bulgaria (864/865-927) ruled over Bulgaria from 893 to 927. It was at the Preslav Literary School in the 890s that the Cyrillic alphabet was developed.

Ivan Asen II was Emperor (Tsar) of Bulgaria  from 1218 to 1241. He severed his alliance with Nicea and entered into a correspondence with Pope Gregory IX.

Tsar Boris I reigned from 852 to 889. At the beginning of 864, Boris was secretly baptized at Pliska by an embassy of Byzantine clergymen.

Boris I was the ruler of the First Bulgarian Empire in 852 to 889. After he abdicated in 889, his eldest son and successor tried to restore the old pagan religion but was deposed by Boris I.
