I think I would say it's off the base in the younger pic. 

I like the Girls of GB & Ireland too but I think my favorite tiara from Her Majesty's vaults is the Vladimir.  I think it's the circles!  I love that it's rounded,  and the versatility of pearls or the beautiful Cambridge emeralds ... mmmm.

Just imagine if rubies were able to be suspended in those circles!  Or even diamond drops!       Slurp!

Girls of GB & Ireland is one I can't wait to see Catherine in. I think Camilla pulls off the big guns very well, but this style will work really nicely on Catherine. I could see it being a favorite for her one day.

the story was that the tiara and the base were given as a gift to the queen from her grandmother as 2 separate items and she was not aware for some years that they were intended to go together, they were only reunited in the late 60s

There are many photos of Queen Mary wearing the tiara in the complete format, with the base.  The earliest one is from just after her wedding, the tiara being a wedding gift, after all.

I'd like to see Catherine rock it without the base just so its a little while until we see it again with the base. Maybe when William becomes King add the base.

I always forget how much I love a wheat motif tiara    Must be the Midwesterner in me!

And I would LOVE to see the nuptial tiara in person, with that pink diamond!

That Russian wreath tiara would look lovely on Charlene or perhaps Estelle one day. One of my favourite mind games is to try and picture royals with tiaras belonging to different families and collections.
