Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625) was an Italian Renaissance painter. The Spanish Queen, Elizabeth of Valois, was a keen amateur painter. In 1559 Anguissola was recruited to go to Madrid as her tutor, with the rank of lady-in-waiting.

If you enjoy Renaissance art, definitely look her up! Her paintings aren't as dramatic as some other artists, but she has such a knack for capturing the personality of her subjects, and often there's a real tenderness in her paintings.  Without being too stereotypical, she definitely uses "woman's intuition" to analyze and reflect the essence of her subjects.
