I probably made an idiot of myself at my 1997 wedding because my groomsmen wore black watch tartan plaid (is that redundant?) vests under their black suit jackets. It was very subtle. Then, my junior bridesmaid wore a dress that the top was like the regular bridesmaids but the bottom was black watch tartan and my flower girls had black watch tartan ties on their dresses at the waist. I'm not Scottish and I married a New York Italian. I'm mostly German and from Texas. Was that a huge faux pas? Haha yes tartan and plaid mean the same thing I found this little bit of advice...... Tradition has it that those who have no tartan of their own can wear the Black Watch (The Universal or Government Tartan) or the Hunting Stewart, but not the Royal Stewart without the express authority of the Queen. However, commercialisation in recent times has rather blurred this. I guess for me, I was concerned with the reports of the Scottish "themed" reception, given that their only claim to the country is the fact the grooms father BOUGHT an estate (and the title that came with it)...... to me it would be like having a full-on Bollywood style Indian wedding, where neither of the couple has much tie to the country other than enjoying a tasty vindaloo! Its the fierce Scottish pride instilled in me by my father and grandmother! Then there is my husband's grandmother, who was piped to her grave by her grandson..... Seems in the end there was only a slight nod to the theme in some of the food, which I'm totally fine with I totally get the cultural appropriation argument, but I could understand the nod to Scotland if, say, James & Pips maybe met & fell in love in Scotland. However, when those stories came out about the Scottish theme I couldn't understand why they just didn't have the wedding in Scotland at the grooms property if it was that important to them.

^ In one of the articles of the best man's speech it's noted by the best man that supposedly James & Pippa met in 2009 in Scotland, so maybe that's the reason why they had Scottish elements and where their fondness for Scotland comes from. Not to forget the years at uni Pippa spent there plus the bought estate & title. I'd say these are pretty strong ties to Scotland for these two non-Scots.

I can't stand the Middletons but according to this website they do have some Scottish ancestry http://ethnicelebs.com/ca...rine-duchess-of-cambridge. In any event, I personally think if you are from the UK it isn't cultural appropriation to celebrate elements of culture coming from any of the countries within the UK and also Ireland because so many of us have Irish links too. These islands have been a melting pot for centuries, we have a shared heritage, we stand together when it matters and I am fairly sure our ancestors got around a bit and swapped DNA so there are no pure bloods... (or maybe that is just my family!)

(or maybe that is just my family!) yup. They're even related to God himself Reminds me of Pippin and Frodo Baggins: Pippin: [at the bar] "Sure I know a Baggins. He's over there, Frodo Baggins." Pippin: "He's my second cousin, once removed on his mother's side" [listeners laugh, "It works for him!" yells one] "and my third cousin twice removed on his father's side, if you follow me." http://www.tk421.net/lotr/film/fotr/11.htmlG

ANDREW DENTON: Yes. What did... When you first met, what did you see in each other? CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK: What did we see in each other? We saw... Well, it's a bit hard. It's a bit blurry, in a way, because it was just after the Olympics had started and it was one of those evenings where...

Lovely name, I am not sure if the name Elizabeth has any personal meaning to them , but I like to think it is maybe a way of supporting HM during this difficult time? Anyways, happy news for the Middletons and Charlotte now has a female cousin which is nice.
