After a happy childhood in France, Mary Queen of Scots experienced a personal tragedy in the weeks before Yule 1560. On December 5, Mary's husband, King Francis II of France died.

For her marriage to Henry, Lord Darnley, Mary Queen of Scots had a papal dispensation from Rome. The dispensation was necessary because Mary and Henry were step-first cousins.
