Just looking at the clutch of recent photos, I get the impression that Anne has mellowed a bit and doesn't see quite as crochety. I think she's at that point in life many women reach who realize there's nothing they've got to prove and it's best to hang on and enjoy the ride. She does look like she's truly enjoying herself.

Agree with you. Princess Royal also faced reality that her children were unlikely to be seen as all that important with in the Royal Family so she declined titles for them. In doing that they did not receive mixed messages of what their stationl would likely be. In a way it is to bad that the Duke of York didn't follow her example when it came to his daughters.

The difference is that Anne had to either ask for titles for her children or accept such an offer. Andrew, on the other hand, would have had to do the exact opposite - ask for them to be denied titles. At the time of Beatrice's birth many people celebrated the birth of the first princess since Anne was born 38 years before and noted that she was a Princess of York' as the Queen herself had been born in 1926. Andrew didn't have to ask for titles for his children - they were automatic just as they were for the Queen and her cousins. In 1988 no one expected the turning of the public against the BRF that took place in the 90s and the suggestion of a slimmed down royal family being made - not confirmed even now mind you. Beatrice wasn't told, until 2012, by the Queen, Charles and William that she was surplus to requirements and always would be. She expected, until after she had left university, that she would be a full-time working royal as that is all anyone, not just her father, indicated to her as she was growing up.

I've always felt a little bad for them in that respect - I imagine it has been difficult for Beatrice and Eugenie to have that future pulled from them. At the same time however, you have to grow up and accept that circumstances can change. Us regular folks can lose money and privilege pretty easily too, and you have to tighten up your bootstraps and deal with it.

While looking for something else I found this. Future Engagements for Princess Royal 20 March 2019 The Princess Royal Companion Ratling, Grand Order of Lady Ratlings, will attend the Ninetieth Anniversary Lodge Meeting at the Law Society, 113 Chancery Lane, London WC2. Does anyone know what this Lodge is? A ratling? (Oxford dictionary defines as "a young rat.")

Thanks! For some reason I thought it was an arcane name for an occupation than no longer exists except for the organization, like some others that do charitable work.

I too was confused by what exactly what the organization was. They look like a fun bunch of ladies, and a good organization.

It seems to me too that Anne appears to be smiling more lately. Or the photos taken recently (like those above) show her smiling, amused and sometimes laughing where they hadn't before. It's nice to see her with a happy face. Maybe she's enjoying 'granny' life more. I know that I Iaugh and smile more when I'm around the youngest members of my family. And the family members and friends that are grannies seem to laugh and smile more than they did with their own children. Mellow indeed.
