There are problems on many levels.
Parenting: I’m pretty sure he would have turned out differently if Felipe and Leti had been his parents, for instance. Somehow, he was allowed to run completely wild. I also refuse to believe that these problems just came by when he was an adult. Someone who is so profoundly bad must have showed signs early on. First, the "endless enabling." He’s 27 years old now, he left school—what, nearly ten years ago?—and has achieved nothing since. Instead of guiding him toward a meaningful life, he was allowed to get silly tattoos, take drugs, and ransack his parents' house. He’s a very vile creature, and nobody seems to have noticed? Instead, he had a diplomatic passport, lots of money, free time, and the wrong friends and lion mommy claiming he was a private person - which he wasn't. He sponged off all the perks he got. Sounds similar?
Standing by him: Of course, you can support a child that went wrong, but MM did not support him. When things hit the fan, she tried to cover up. God knows how often she covered up beforehand, and she had no moral problem deleting rape videos from his phone and letting the SIM card disappear. She seems to have no moral compass either. And she did not care about the NRF in general (who generously took her in 20 years ago and put up with twenty years of excuse why she could not work that day. She put her vile son before her father-in-law, husband and daughter. And it’s not like it hit her by surprise—they knew, yet didn’t intervene, even when it happened in their very basement. They guy and his "friends" demolished their house and they did not react. MM should declare that she’s "too sick to work" and retire, preferably somewhere on a lonely Norwegian island, weaving and pottering, and best not be in contact with anyone outside her circle of family and friends. She can’t do representation or charity work ever again, not even if it is just a sports event. The damage she has caused-on top of her son's crimes- is immense. One nearly wishes, at this stage, that ML had inherited the throne - even the shamane, another vile creature, would do better than MM.
The crimes: I think we still only know the tip of the iceberg, and I really hope he gets a hefty jail sentence and is forced to: (1) sober up, (2) undergo vocational training while in jail, and (3) develop some guilt for what he has done. This leads to the next question: Does he feel remorse? I doubt it. If dyeing his hair and going to Denmark to party is the only response he has, it doesn’t seem like it.

This! IMHO, MM and Marcus Borg are the current poster children for failed parenting. Marius, despite the initial instability of his early life, lived a charmed life as the step-son of the Crown Prince of Norway and by sheer inertia not even ambition he should be ensconced in a cushy job that pays six figures (USD) with a reputable company. However, due to the negligent parenting he received by both parents and to a lesser extent his step-parents, he was allowed to run wild with his vices going unchecked and never experiencing accountability. And I blame his parenting mostly because his siblings on his mother's side seem to be on the right track and barring any information to the contrary, it can be assumed that his siblings on his father's side are also on the right track. Now he has grown into an abuser and sexual predator, with little to no chance rehabilitation, as the total number of his victims seem to grow exponentially by the day. He is also a lazy, entitled and disrespectful leech with no care for anything except his own gratification.

I think the big difference is Felipe and Letizia see it as an important duty to raise their daughters fully aware of the expectations of public service placed upon them. MM sees being a royal as a way to do really cool, fun things when you want but ditch anything that looks like hard work.
Given Marius is not her son with Haakon I suspect there was a lot of guilt about the public spotlight he was placed in - added to the already existing guilt of coming from a split family - so MM and Marcus indulged him in a way that would come back to bite them all later.

I think also maybe guilt about Marius not being "equal" to his younger siblings so maybe MM (and Haakon and Marcus) over-compensated by indulging him too?

^ And what problematic royal child does this call to mind, except it was I am not treated as equal to my older sibling? This is when I long for a Tommy Lascelles to say “I. Think. Not.”

Marius greatly profited from his mother’s wedding. His bio-father has money too, but AFIK he lived with MM (and yet another partner) in Kristiansand until Haakon entered the picture. You didn’t see much of him, as he was considered a "private person" (though he wasn’t, as he was enjoying the perks). Initially, when he was included in the family photos, it looked like a "normal" blended family. He seemed to adapt well, while SM went through a more difficult phase.
I think things went wrong around the time when MM (like mommy lion) declared his social media off-limits, and he stopped appearing in official family photos. You have to argue that it was her who had him included. From a PR perspective, it first was a smart move. Back then in the beginning, he was a very likeable little toddler at the wedding, and his inclusion showed that he had been warmly received into the family. He interacted well with Harald and Sonia, and from what you could see, you thought, "It could have worked" – which was the intention behind that campaign. Plus, it gave MM the benefit of doubt as people thought "the kid turned out okay, she can't be THAT bad". It was all part of a campaign to whitewash her.
He was at the wedding and even mentioned on the palace homepage. However, this changed later, and I believe the change happened because he was becoming increasingly difficult. Two things went wrong that were intertwined: Whitewashed MM did not develop like it was hoped: To sum up: 20 years after the wedding - even if Marius didn't exist - MM would be the weakest of all crown princesses and queens. She had long periods in which she did not work at all, without there being any reasonable reason for this. Of course, she had young children at first, but Mathilde in Belgium, for example, had one more (and even one with a learning disability) and still managed to build up her own profile. MM had these long “periods of illness”, which we now know were very exaggerated and not very credible, as she continued to jet around the world in her spare time and there were events she always attended.
Marius - and the associated interpretation of his role - is now an additional problem - which has an insane dynamic. At some point over the last 15 years, Marius has evolved into an unlikeable, unsympathetic wannabe gangster who likes to take advantage of all the perks of royal life: Diplomatic passport, buildings, money, connections, but brings in nothing. He has also shown that he doesn't care about the social status of his mother and half-siblings, even if he has benefited from it himself. He doesn't rape women just anywhere: but sometimes in the cellar (!) of the family home. Here the circle closes: Haakon looks like an idiot who can't even get his domestic situation under control or get his wife to work. Marius seems to have been allowed to do whatever he wanted for 15 years, no matter how immoral, criminal and expensive it was. This actually disqualifies Haakon for any leadership position, especially as MM clearly took a stand by committing criminal acts herself.
Putting MM in nice dresses now (well, it wasn't that nice) and having her walk with pretend-dignity with a tiara just shows what a charade the NRF is or has become. Anyone with an intact moral compass would be ashamed of themselves - but not MM. Harvest time will come after Harald's death. Hakoon seems suitable as a nice, uncomplicated crown prince, but not to lead the country morally. He has no role model function whatsoever and has proven that he has no skill even on a small scale - his own family - how is this to be transferred to Norway? MM publicly slapped down everyone who gave her a second chance (and a third and fourth). She has proved: She was not even worth the first chance she asked the Norwegians for.
Mariu's problems have manifested themselves. It is very unlikely that he will develop a healthy moral compass, a constructive work ethic, respectful behavior towards women and an admission of guilt. He will "entertain" the Norwegian public for the next 50+ years, if he does not die of an overdose beforehand.

Very nicely said. I particularly liked this line: "She has proved: She was not even worth the first chance she asked the Norwegians for."

This is terrible for MM's prognosis. She will require a lung transplant at some point, and with her popularity and reputation in tatters, the Norwegian public may feel she doesn't 'deserve' a donor lung. I wouldn't be surprised if Haakon divorced her to save himself and his heirs. Miss Marple

Haakon has already proved that he is MM's simp and I doubt the King and Queen would demand he leave her.

Miss Marple WELL SAID! It's a sad commentary on the NRF but spot on. H doesn't have the guts to do anything, he's no better than a handbag being carried by MM. Is there any chance of a voters referendum to abolish this mockery of a royal house> (rapists, rapist defender, rapist enabler, kook that talks to angels, shaman/conman...Grifters one and all) ?
