ANDREW DENTON: Yes. What did... When you first met, what did you see in each other? CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK: What did we see in each other? We saw... Well, it's a bit hard. It's a bit blurry, in a way, because it was just after the Olympics had started and it was one of those evenings where...

My dear late Uncle and Godfather Daniel was had several papal knighthoods, Knight Commander of Malta, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher, Order of Saint Sylvester, &nRoyal Savoy Orders of Maurice and Lazarus. It’s probably the beginning of my interest in all of this. There were, of course, many uniforms with important distinctions, medals and many photos of him in the with the Pope and assorted minor royals which this is very reminiscent of. He was a wonderful man.

I really like the fact that the Royal children received their first communion, wearing very simple robes. Here in the US first communion dresses have gotten completely out of hand with many of them resembling miniature wedding dresses complete with hoop skirts, trains, and long veils. And I think the little girls get so focused on their clothing with the event loses its spiritual significance for many of them.

May 11Jacques and Gabriella receive the First Holy CommunionJacques and Gabriella, aged nine, received their First Holy Communion in a ceremony at the Chapelle de la Visitation in Monaco-Ville. The event, a significant moment in the Catholic faith, took place in a celebratory atmosphere and was attended by close family members. Albert also received his First Communion at the Chapelle de la Visitation, in 1965. Awww they look so sweet.

I love how they are holding hands: two fingers entwined. plus both heads leaning in towards each other. they must be very close. G

I am not Catholic but I do appreciate this focus on the humility and somber nature of the event. Especially for royal children who could have nearly anything they want in a material sense.

As a child I envied the little Catholic girls who got to wear those dresses - though not quite so elaborate then - that made their appearance each spring in the local department store. But as a very grown up woman now I appreciate the simplicity of the alb. It is, as was said before, a very sweet picture.
