King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy reigned from 1861 until 1871. He was born Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy on March 14, 1820 in Turin.

The Royal House of Savoy is one of the oldest Royal Families in the world. It was established in 1003.

Article on Vittoria in today's NYT she is (perhaps predictably?) a burgeoning Instagram influencer.

Wow - vicious infighting over a defunct throne. Totally makes sense.

Good find though!  Star

I saw this as a thread on Twitter earlier today - found it quite hilarious between the influencer heir and the non-existent throne. Her father said some of other pretenders weren’t even important enough to be exiled, so they definitely couldn’t lay claim to the crown!

I love this!   Laughing

Thanks for sharing!  I just forwarded the link to my school email...my students love hearing about pretenders to thrones (they get quite heated when arguing over who should be the king of France if France were to go in that direction again  )

You're welcome! I'd never really heard of this family until the article piqued my interest and I came here and lo and behold, there's a thread. The article has some great zingers in it for sure

Ah yes, the always-classy Savoy-Carignano family.  How many months pregnant was she?  And his parents' marriage wasn't approved (which is one reason the other Savoys don't buy EF's position as "heir").  I remember his many appearances in the gossip pages in the 90s, with his 80s hair style (very Farrah).  Oh, he had that girl-friend, something di Andia IIFC, older, not approved by his parents, with a daughter already?

This is so silly. The girls are sweet and pretty.

But dear what would King VE II. think? With those heirs Italy would've gone down the drain, before it was even created.

Amadeus III of Savoy (1095-1148) was Count of Savoy and Maurienne from 1103 until 1148.
He helped restore the Abbey of St. Maurice of Agaune, in which the former kings of Burgundy had been crowned.

Thomas I (1178-1233) was Count of Savoy from 1189 to 1233. He was known as "Thomas the Ghibelline" because of his career as Imperial Vicar of Lombardy.
